- Objectives
This program is hosted by the National Institute of Health and Nutrition (NIHN), National Institutes of Biomedical Innovation, Health and Nutrition (NIBIOHN), and conducted as a part of activities of WHO Collaborating Centre for Nutrition and Physical Activity (JPN-88). It aims to promote international collaboration between Asian countries and to support fellows to acquire and improve their knowledge and skills related to health and nutrition. - Areas of Interest
Surveys and research that fall under these NIBIOHN research activities.
1) Nutrition surveillance
2) Physical activity surveillance - Eligibility
Eligible applicants should fulfill at least one of the requirements below, with sufficient communication skill in English. They should be aged 39 years or less (as of April 1, 2020):
1) Non-Japanese citizens who are studying or working outside Japan at a university, research institute, or other institutes in the health and nutrition field, and has a doctorate degree or research capabilities at least equivalent to a doctorate degree holder.
2) Medical doctors, dentists, nurses, dieticians, pharmacists, or government officers who have sufficient research capabilities and have been nominated by the principal of their institute for outstanding achievement. - Number of Fellowships to be Awarded
One - Outline of the Program
1) Duration
Fellowships are awarded for a period of 3 months. No extension of the period will be permitted.
April 1, 2020 to March 31, 2021
2) Commencement Date
The fellowship must commence during the following period:
May 1, 2020 to December 1, 2021
3) Coverage of Expenses
① Travel expenses
Round-trip economy class air tickets, from the international airport nearest to the selected
fellow's institute to Narita Airport, or Haneda Airport, at the lowest available cost, is provided.
Also, the transportation fee (e.g., limousine bus) between Narita Airport (or Haneda Airport) and the NIHN will be paid in cash (Japanese yen) after arrival and before leaving Japan.
② Stipends and accommodation
The NIBIOHN will provide 100,000 Japanese yen per month to each fellow as stipends, which include commuting costs (between the NIHN and the fellow's apartment), meals and petty expenses.
The NIBIOHN will arrange accommodation to each fellow (depending on circumstances, this arrangement will be entrusted to a third party). Rent, including utility bills such as heating, electricity and water charges, is directly paid to the accommodation agent. Any additional costs such as NHK subscription fee, telephone, internet services, and excess utility bills will be borne by each fellow.
③ Overseas Travel Insurance
The NIBIOHN will pay for overseas travel accident and sickness insurance during the period of the fellowship.
④ Research Expenses
The NIBIOHN shall provide research expenses in accordance with the period of the fellowship, as in the table below. These will be provided as research necessities demand and may include domestic travel expenses.Period Amount
4) Obligation for Research Reports
3 months 100,000 yen
Each fellow must submit a research report in the required forms to the NIHN within one month of the completion of the fellowship tenure. - Application Procedure
1) Acceptance of Application
Applicants must submit their applications in the required forms to International Center for Nutrition and Information at the NIHN during the following period:

① Applications for Fellowship (form I -1)
*Personal Statement and Record of Employment should be attached.
② Letters of reference/recommendation from the head of the applicant's affiliation (form I -2) - Selection Process and Notification
The Director General of the NIBIOHN will select the fellow with advice from WHO. Notification of the selection results will be made to all applicants by February 28, 2020. Award letters with the duration of the fellowship will be issued by the NIBIOHN to awardees as well as other documents for entering Japan. (N.B. The NIBIOHN does not respond to any individual enquiry on selection process) - Notes:
1) Incomplete or otherwise flawed applications will be rejected. Refusal letters to such unsuccessful applicants shall be issued at the same time as other applicants.
