2.Background and objectives

Our section plans and promotes research to contribute to national health and nutrition policies from a comprehensive perspective. As part of this effort, we are currently studying indicators for evaluating Japan food and beverage manufacturers from the perspective of health considerations, in order to contribute to the “promotion of a healthy and sustainable food environment”promoted by the government. Currently, there is a growing global interest in whether companies are providing healthy food. The Access to Nutrition initiative (ATNi), a Dutch non-governmental organization, evaluates the nutrition-related policies, initiatives, and performance of the world's leading food and beverage manufacturers, and is used to improve and strengthen their nutrition initiatives. It is expected that Japan food and beverage manufacturers will also be able to provide more healthy foods by evaluating their efforts and achievements, which will make it easier for people to access healthier foods.

3.Overview of our research

In evaluating, various indicators such as the governance of the company, what kind of products it offers, and what kind of labeling is used on containers and packaging are required. Among them, a useful indicator for evaluating products is the nutrient profile model. Until now, a nutrition profile model had not been developed in Japan, but in September 2024, our research group developed a Japan version of a nutrition profile model based on Japan's food culture and nutritional issues. Therefore, we have introduced the Japan version of the nutrition profile model into an international evaluation index for evaluating food and beverage manufacturers, and are considering evaluation indicators to appropriately reflect the activities of businesses, including categories other than products.

4.Promoting Research

In addition, from the viewpoint of maintaining fairness and neutrality, we cannot accept donations from food and beverage manufacturers for research by Section of Research Planning and Promotion.
